Where Matter Becomes Narrative
Judaism and art share a deep relationship with material, intention, and story. In this project, marble becomes more than a medium, it becomes a vessel for meaning. Chosen for its strength, permanence, and natural beauty, marble carries a sense of time, memory, and endurance. Each mezuzah begins with an idea rooted in Jewish tradition and is translated into a contemporary sculptural form. From the first sketch to the final carving, every detail is considered, allowing the material to speak while honoring the story it holds. The result is an object that bridges ritual and art, tradition and modernity.
The Weight of Meaning
The name Nakash carries a deeply personal meaning. My husband, Dor Nakash, was injured during Operation Protective Edge while serving in an elite engineering unit of the IDF. He was wounded by sniper fire in Gaza and survived by a clear miracle. His injury occurred while he was protecting others, standing at the front. Just as he stood guard and protected us, the mezuzah stands guard at the entrance of the home. This project was born from that parallel, protection, responsibility, and the act of safeguarding life.

The form draws naturally from the Tablets of the Covenant.
Not every tablet is identical, not every side carries the same role, yet only together do they form a whole.
It may also be read as the balance between the obligations between humanity and God, and between one person and another.
Connection to the Mezuzah
The mezuzah reminds us that a Jewish home stands upon balance.
Between faith and action, sacred and everyday, heaven and earth.
The mezuzah is shaped as two standing tablets placed side by side, distinct yet inseparable, symbolizing the equilibrium upon which the Jewish home is built.
